We felt it appropriate to kick off our Herd Highlight series with our newest employee, Kelly Okun. Kelly spent the last five years competing around the world as a professional golfer. While on the road, Kelly also worked as a marketing strategy consultant and freelance golf writer. As a graduate from William & Mary University, she is happy to find herself back in Virginia at our Reston Headquarters. Learn more about her below!
How does your passion for golf come through in your work?
It’s all about growing the game and giving people the best chance of falling in love with the sport that taught me so much. If a piece of content I write inspires one person, especially a child, give golf a try, I feel like I’ve done my job well.
What does it mean to be part of the Herd?
I tell everyone I hit the lottery with this job. As a professional golfer, I was a little worried about following the normal 9-5 routine in an office, but Buffalo Agency has made it so much fun!
It feels really great to be part of a community who loves golf as much as, and some even more than, I do. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to explore my other creative passions while still supporting the game I love. I am so lucky to have joined the Herd.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
I’m excited to learn about linear ad buying in these coming months. I’ve always known that I want to be involved in marketing strategy, but I’m looking forward to dipping my toes in data analytics and expanding my knowledge.
Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?
I think it would be fun to swap places with Derek Koenig (Buffalo’s Chief Creative and Content Officer). I would love to experience even a fraction of what goes through his mind as he’s creating campaign concepts.
What are you passionate about?
Golf (no surprise there), reading, writing, hiking, and learning languages. I’m determined to read the Harry Potter series in Russian before I’m 30!
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
I once ate a piece of gluten…just kidding, I would never knowingly do that. I would have to say walking across a portion of Spain in 5 days with nothing but a backpack and a best friend.
Where’s your favorite place in the world?
That’s a tough one. I’ve technically lived in Russia and Australia, and those are unforgettable experiences, but Park City, UT, has always felt like my home away from home.
If you could be any animal, which would you be?
An elephant – they are so calm and majestic.
